A Great Breakfast Option

Over the years I have always been a strong advocate of having a whole-food meal for breakfast, eggs on toast, cereal, etc. My reasoning for this is simply because it helps to speed up your metabolism due to the fact that your body has to expend energy through the process of digestion, also known as, Thermic Effect of Eating (TEE). Therefore, potentially it may assist your weight-loss efforts

Furthermore, I noticed that when bodybuilders had a substantial breakfast earlier in the day they were able to achieve a far greater level of leanness compared to those competitors who had a protein shake for breakfast and then perhaps a whole-food meal for their mid-morning meal instead.

In addition to this, many weight-loss programs over the past few years have recommended having shakes for breakfast and lunch along with a whole-food meal for dinner. I have never recommended this approach simply because it is not a long-term, sustainable approach to weight loss. Also, since there is minimal digestion required because the shakes are in a pre-digested form, there is virtually no boost in your metabolism compared to eating whole foods. As a result, for many years I have had my cereal in the mornings during the week and then had a cooked breakfast at least once at a cafe on the weekends.

To be perfectly honest I have never really enjoyed my cereal but I simply knew that it was doing me some good from a metabolism-boosting perspective as well as a health perspective due to the ingredients it contained. One morning I was running late for work so I decided to have a smoothie instead of my usual breakfast so I put a heap of ingredients into the blender, mixed it up, poured it into a portable container and went off to work. I drank some of the smoothie on the way to work (I'm not sure if that's legal) and drank the rest of it at work. To my surprise it was actually very pleasant and certain preferable to the drudgery of mindlessly chewing through mouthfuls of tasteless cereal.

Now I know having a shake for breakfast goes against one of the most popular and commonly used weight-loss principles, which is of course having a whole-food meal for breakfast. But I have to admit, a good-tasting, healthy smoothie is a far better option that skipping breakfast, as many people do, or having to almost force down a bowl of cereal in the morning.

Having somewhat refined the recipe after several attempts, I have finally managed to create a recipe that I am very happy with and now enjoy most mornings for breakfast instead of my plain, boring cereal. I still have my cooked breakfast on the weekend of course!



Here's a Great Smoothie Breakfast Option

Add the following ingredients to a blender and blend well:
  • 200mls of coconut water
  • 1 scoop of a SuperFood Blend
  • 1/4 lemon
  • 1/4 green apple
  • 1 cup of kale
  • 3-4 pieces of frozen mango
  • 1/2 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon of psyllium husks
  • 1 tablespoon of BCN's Gastro Forte AG
  • Occasionally I might substitute the lemon and apple with a banana for a bit of variety, but the above recipe is what I tend to use most of the time.

    Even though the smoothie is in a pre-digested form and won't offer the same metabolism-boosting effects that my cereal may offer (because the cereal requires more digestion), I far prefer having my morning smoothie compared to the cereal. Plus, since I exercise most mornings, the exercise session will be able to provide a morning metabolism boost instead.
