Ab Exercise Machines

Many people wonder if they should purchase one of the ab exercise machines they see advertised on TV. Is an ab exercise machine a good investment? Or are there better ways to exercise your abdominal muscles? They promise to give you a toned, flat stomach in a matter of weeks, but do they really work?

The answer is 'NO' but the reason why may actually surprise you. The various abdominal exercise machines do exercise your abdominal muscles so why is it that you should not invest in one of the abdominal exercise machines?

Ab Exercise Machines

Before you spend your hard-earned money on any weight-loss system or approach, there are a few questions that need to be asked. We will use the abdominal exercise machine as an example.

  • Is the weight-loss system something you can follow for the rest of your life?

  • Does the weight-loss system use a 'Multi-directional Approach'?

  • Does the weight-loss system (or product) have a low cost-to-benefit ratio?

  • Does the system make logical sense?
Let's address each of these questions individually.

Is the weight-loss system something
you can follow for the rest of your life?

Any weight-loss system you decide to follow must be something you can do for the rest of your life; it must become a sustainable lifestyle habit. If it isn't, then it is likely that any weight-loss results you achieve by using it will be short-lived. As soon as you stop using it, the weight you lose will be put back on.

This is all too common with people who go on diets. As soon as they go off the diet, the weight tends to pile back on.

When it comes to ab exercise machines, probably less than 1% of them get used consistently by their purchasers! Most of them end up gathering dust in a back room or shed or are used to hang the washing on! The fold-up varieties are often used once or twice, then folded up and put away, never to be brought out again. Some of them aren't even taken out of the box they come in!

Does the weight-loss system use a
'Multi-directional Approach'?

Abdominal Exercise Machines

The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to follow a 'Multi-directional Approach'. This means you target weight (and body fat) from different directions rather than just one (as is the case with dieting).

There is no one approach to successful weight loss. You can't just reduce your food intake and expect to lose weight and keep it off. You can't just perform one exercise, like on an abdominal exercise machine, and expect to achieve permanent results either.

You need to use a combination of principles that all target excess weight and body fat from different directions. For example, nutrition, supplementation, resistance exercise, aerobic exercise are the different 'Lifestyle Factors' you need to select principles from. This means that not only will you achieve faster results but it will also make it much easier to keep the weight off long term.

Does the weight-loss system (or product)
have a low cost-to-benefit ratio?

This means that the results achieved by following the system or using the product far outweighs the cost of it.

Virtually any one of the ab exercise machines on the market does not fulfill this criteria simply because they only work one muscle group, the abdominal muscles, and therefore only stimulate muscle fibres in this area. By stimulating muscle fibres in the abdominal region, the muscles become thicker and stronger; that is it! The calorie or energy expenditure is almost negligible.

The same rule applies for an electronic ab machine as well. The results being promised by promoters of these devices far exceed the 'real world' results that people achieve by using them.

Even the best ab machine can be easily duplicated by abdominal exercises that don't require any ab exercise machines at all!

Does the system make logical sense?

It is essential that the weight-loss system or product makes logical sense to you. If the results that are promised require little effort or seem too good to be true, they probably are! Weight loss or ideally, fat loss, is a methodical approach that requires principles that follow fundamental physiological principles.

Small, Frequent Meals

If the promoters of any weight-loss system make it sound like it is something that has never been done before, don't even consider it! Weight-loss principles have not changed over the millennia and are not likely to suddenly change in our lifetime either. There are fundamental laws that govern the human body and when you understand these laws, use them and make them lifestyle habits, the results will follow; there is simply no other way.

However, if you try to find a short cut or cut corners in your weight-loss efforts, you are destined to fail; it is simply the way the human body has been designed.

With regards to using an ab exercise machine, do you really think that by doing a couple of ab exercises the rolls of fat on your stomach are somehow going to magically disappear? Of course not! It doesn't make logical sense.

Overall, using an ab exercise machine and performing abdominal exercises have their place in a weight-loss system. They make up a very small part of a very large picture. By keeping that in mind, you will still be able to successfully achieve your weight-loss goal without spending your money on a worthless ab exercise machine.
