The Acai Berry Benefits

The acai berry offers many health benefits. It is found in the Amazon forest and the natives there have experienced the benefits for centuries. Now there's research to actually support the claims!

Despite some of the wild and ludicrous claims made by some dubious product promoters, there are in fact a whole range of health benefits.

Most of the health benefits of acai berries come from the powerful antioxidants it contains. These include anthocyanins and proanthocyanins, which include polyphenols and flavanoids.

The Acai Berry Benefits

Acai berries (and its ingredients) have the following effects that have been validated by scientific research:

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 1:
A vasodilating effect on blood vessels

A study conducted in Brazil in 2006 on rats found that extracts from acai berries were able to induce a dilating effect on blood vessels.

This preliminary research indicates that acai berries may be used for medicinal purposes to treat cardiovascular diseases, however, extensive research on human subjects needs to be done first.

Nevertheless, initial findings certainly appear to be positive.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 2:
Acai berries may have blood-thinning
(anti-coagulant) properties

Despite their not being any scientific literature demonstrating this effect directly, it is well-known that flavanoids have anti-coagulant properties. Of course, flavanoids are just one of the phytonutrients (nutrients from plants) that is contained in acai berries so the inference can be made that it too, has this effect.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 3:
May reduce the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases

A study conducted in 2009 in Brazil found that pre-treatment with acai berries resulted in decreased oxidative damage of the brain tissues tested when exposed to the oxidising agent hydrogen peroxide.

This study suggests that acai berries have a protective effect on brain tissue and may substantially reduce the risk of developing neurological disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases during a person's lifetime.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 4:
Demonstrates powerful antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory effects

A recent study from Canada found that the phytonutrient antioxidants in acai berries, particularly the anthocyanins, have a protective effect on red blood cells by penetrating the cell and protecting it from oxidative damage.

Acai Berries

The bio-active compounds in acai berry have also shown to prevent the development of pro-inflammatory chemoattractants in the body. These anti-inflammatory effects of acai berries have a potentially a wide range of benefits, especially when you consider the number of diseases and conditions that result from inflammatory effects in the body, i.e. arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, cancer, etc.

However, more research needs to be done in this area.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 5:
May inhibit cancer development

A study conducted in Columbus, Ohio in 2010 found that a number of berries and fruits including: acai berry, Noni, Goji berry and red raspberries, were all capable of inhibiting tumour progression. Despite the fact that they all contain varying amounts of phytonutrients like, anthocyanins and ellagitannins.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 6:
May increase lifespan

A study published in Experimental Gerontology in 2010 found that intake of acai berry has the potential to antagonise the detrimental effects of fat in the diet and alleviate oxidative stress in ageing.

When you consider the high fat intakes of the vast majority of people in western society, supplementing the diet with a concentrated, high bio-available form of acai berry makes so much sense.

Health Benefits of Acai Berries 7:
Protects genes

A brazilian study completed in late 2009 found that acai berries had powerful protective effects of genes (antigenotoxic). These protective effects were found to result from the various phytonutrients (nutrients from plants) that it contains. These include: carotenoids, anthocyanins, phenolic, and flavanoids. This is a list of acai berry research that has been publish in scientific journals. Over time, more studies are likely to find additional benefits of acai berries.

However, at this stage there is NO scientific evidence to support the acai berries and weight loss claims!

Nevertheless, based on the information that is currently available, it is definitely worthwhile taking a supplement that contains acai berries. One of the best acai superfood supplements on the market is, SAMBAZON Organic Freeze-Dried Acai Powder, Antioxidant Superfood, 90-Gram Jar
