The Benefits of Goji Berry

There are many benefits of goji berry, most of which come from the high levels of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and flavonoids it contains. Goji berry plants are found in many parts of Asia and have been used for centuries, primarily to promote healthy vision and overall general health.

However, there are many apparent benefits of goji berry made by marketers of goji products that have no scientific research to support their claims. Nevertheless, as more research is done on this fascinating Superfood, more benefits are sure to come to light.

Benefits of Goji 1:
May prevent age-related vision loss

Benefits of Goji Berry
One of the proven benefits of goji berry is its ability to improve vision health. Since goji berries contain one of the highest levels of zeaxanthin (about 100-200mg per 100 grams), it may be effective at preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Zeaxanthin is one of the nutrients that accumulates in the macula of the eye and is required by it for optimum functioning.

A recent study found that consuming a small amount of goji berries about 15 grams a day for 28 days, plasma zeaxanthin levels can increase by 2.5 times!

Benefits of Goji 2:
May prevent cancer cell growth in the human body

A human study published in Life Sciences in 2005 found that goji berries prevented proliferation of liver cancer cells and induces cancer cell death. Of course, more research needs to be conducted in order verify this amazing property, however, this study is certainly promising nonetheless.

Benefits of Goji 3:
Lowers blood sugar and blood lipids

Certain constituents found in goji berry are well known to have blood sugar and blood lipid lowering effects.

The goji berry contains various carbohydrates, both simple and complex, that have been shown to have powerful bio-active properties. In addition to these, goji berries also contain a range of antioxidants that have also been shown to support these effects.

May reduce sunburn reaction

The goji berry is well-known for its antioxidant properties and a recent study found that when goji berry juice was consumed prior to UV radiation exposure, the oedema associated with sunburn reaction was significantly reduced.

Improves a range of physical capacities

Benefits of Goji Berry A double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2008 found that goji berry benefits extended to a whole range of physical capacities including:

  • Athletic performance

  • Quality of sleep

  • Ease of awakening

  • Ability to focus

  • Mental acuity

  • Calmness

  • Feelings of contentment and happiness
  • These results were achieved in only 2 weeks of using goji berries!

    Even though at this stage there is limited research on the benefits of goji berry, there is at least enough data to suggest that it is one of the top antioxidant foods and is a worthwhile additional to your supplement plan.
