Thank you so much. I have been trying to establish the different between "meal replacement powders" and protein powders" and their roles in weight loss, and now finally understand! Good Information on Meal Replacements

Thank you for explaining the difference between the different types of whey protein, I was not aware that such difference existed. Also, your article was very informative on the different types of products available (MR) vs. (RTD), and the added amino acids that should be in each one.

I lost 10 kg in 2005 with protein shakes

With protein shakes I lost about 10 kg in 4 months.

I used them to replace my breakfast and dinner.

Now in 2012 I am still able to maintain my body weight with one protein shake a day for breakfast.

It's simple but not easy.

If I can do it, so can you!

Protein shakes for weight loss

Hi Novita,

Nice to hear from you and congratulations on being able to maintain your weight loss.

Whilst I agree with using protein shakes as a snack occasionally I don't necessarily agree with replacing your breakfast and/ or dinner with them.

Many weight-loss programs here in Australia have used a similar approach whereby they suggested having a protein shake for breakfast and lunch and then having a whole-meal for dinner.

Firstly, this approach is not a long-term sustainable approach to nutrition. Plus, it does not teach people correct meal preparation habits. Therefore, for most people who use this approach they lose weight initially but inevitably put it all back on some time later.

I accept that for some people a protein shake for their breakfast is okay since they don't feel like eating, but I always suggest having whole foods for their next meal (mid-morning) since whole foods boost your metabolism more than protein shakes simply because they require digestion by the body.

Ideally though, whole foods for breakfast, the occasional protein shake (or better still, whole foods) for mid-morning and/ or mid-afternoon snacks, along with whole foods for lunch and dinner is the best approach for long-term, sustainable weight loss.
