Breads and Cereals - Nutrition Poor

Those carbs like breads and cereals are really nutrition poor but also probably contain gluten. Even if you are not a celiac, gluten can play havoc with your gut. So to get better nutrition stick to the fibrous and starchy sources as listed above. The fibrous sources are also beneficial as they are converted to short chain fatty acids in the bowel which has numerous health benefits.

Carb overload

I was hoodwinked by the healthy pyramid eating regime. I tried really hard to lose weight, followed everything the dietician had told me and still found it extremely hard to lose weight. It's only recently that I have hit on a low carb, (most of my carbs are from fruit and veg) and a higher intake of lean protein, and it's working!

It absolutely astounds me that dieticians and nutritionists still promote a high-carb/ low-fat diet. It caused me to give up studying nutrition at Curtin after a year (after finishing my first degree) because I couldn't believe they were telling us to promote this style of eating!

It's all to do with who provides the funding to the university! Unfortunately, as in so many areas of life, it is run by the almighty dollar!

Nevertheless, I'm pleased to hear that you're on the right track Dawn and are getting results.
