Dieting and Food Cravings

It appears that there is a strong relationship between dieting and food cravings. A recent study published in, Appetite, provided evidence that restricting food intake increases food cravings1; just another reason to stop dieting!

The study involved 129 women. 52 of the women were currently dieting to lose weight, 40 were watching their weight, and 37 were non-dieters. Over a 7-day period the group monitored their food craving incidents. Of course, the dieters experienced the most food cravings and had significantly more cravings than the other two groups. Not surprisingly, chocolate was the most craved food.

Moreover, the cravings the dieters experienced were more intense and harder to resist compared to those experienced by the other two groups. The cravings were most often for the foods they were restricting.

The bottom line is once again, dieting is not the best way to lose weight. By simply following a sound nutritional plan that offers a wide variety of foods, enough calories, and allows for the occasional indulgence, then not only will you be able to lose weight easily and quickly, but best of all you'll be able to keep it off long term.
