Food Combining For Weight Loss ?
Food combining for weight loss and general health is still practiced by some dieters today even though it was disproven years ago! A food combining diet recommends only eating foods from the same macronutrient group and not to mix them, i.e. only eat carbohydrate-based foods or protein-based foods together and don't have carbohydrates or protein in the same meal! However, they say you can have fibrous (low-density) vegetables with either of them. Also, food combining diets recommend only eating fruit on its own and only eating the melon fruits on their own, i.e. do not eat melons with any other fruits. Food combining for weight loss is encouraged by some health practitioners and may achieve results simply because people eat healthier, not necessarily because the principles are effective.
A food combining diet is based on incorrect assumptions about human physiology. It suggests that carbohydrate-based foods require an alkaline environment in order to be digested and protein-based foods require an acidic environment in order to be digested. Therefore, if they are consumed together they ‘cancel’ each other out and the foods don’t get digested properly. However, once scientists discovered the truth about human physiology many years ago this philosophy was disproven. The fact is, once food passes from the stomach to the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), the pancreas secretes sodium bicarbonate which neutralises the acid from the stomach, creating a neutral environment. At the same time the pancreas also secretes digestive enzymes specific to all 3 macronutrients (pancreatic amylase, protease and lipase) that digest the macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat) in the neutral environment of the duodenum. Plus, if the food combining diet theory was correct, a totally natural food like ‘Mother’s milk’ would not be digested well at all because it contains all 3 macronutrients together. The fact is, humans have been eating protein and carbs together in meals for millennia so don't be concerned about food combining for weight loss or general health and go and enjoy your chicken and rice meal or your steak and potatoes!
