Green Tea Benefits

The many health benefits of green tea!

Green Tea Benefits

The green tea benefits have been well known for many years, especially when it comes to its antioxidants abilities, general health benefits and even weight loss!

Advancements in nutritional science have now made available a far more bioavailable green tea supplement that can magnify the green tea benefits even further!

Green tea contains a group of bio-active compounds collectively known as ‘green tea catechins’. They are polyphenolic structures belonging to the flavonol family and they provide the health benefits of green tea.

In this article we will examine the various health benefits of green tea, why the supplemental form provides significantly higher levels of the active ingredients compared to green tea as a drink and finally, how a next generation, green tea complex developed by Italian researchers, makes the active ingredients in green tea far more bioavailable. This will of course, make the green tea benefits even more significant!

Green tea benefits

Research has demonstrated the various health benefits of green tea, which include the following effects:
Antiviral
Antioxidant
Antibacterial
• Antiangiogenic
, which means it stops the formation of cancer blood vessels
• Antimetastatic, which means it stops cancer from spreading throughout the body
• Increased fatty acid oxidation, which may lead to weight loss
• Improved blood lipid profiles
• Improved blood sugar profiles
• Improved various hormone profiles (including growth hormone (GH)

Green tea weight loss promoted by EGCG

A substantial body of research now shows that one of the catechins found in green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), can increase basal energy expenditure by around 4%!

This means that if a person burns up around 1500 calories a day, they can increase their daily calorie expenditure by another 60 calories without exercising. Of course, this amount could be increased even further when combined with other thermogenic ingredients and perhaps when used in conjunction with exercise.

The effectiveness of EGCG as a green tea fat burner results from its ability to inhibit the activity of the enzymes that breakdown norepinephrine.

Norepinephrine (NE) is a well-known sympathetic nervous system stimulant. By stimulating the sympathetic nervous system, thermogenesis, the production of body heat, increases. Thermogenesis is also linked to the oxidation of body fat.

However, the body is able to limit the amount of stimulation that occurs in the sympathetic nervous system by activating enzymes [monoamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT)] that inhibit NE activity in the body.

There are various other methods through which green tea benefits weight loss and we will examine these a little later in this article.

Some people may think that they can simply drink green tea instead of using the supplemental form in order to obtain the amazing green tea benefits. Unfortunately though, they will need to drink 10-12 cups of green tea in order to obtain the same level of EGCG (around 300mg) that is contained in two green tea capsules!

Absorption of green tea catechins

Despite the enormous number of health benefits of green tea, the active ingredients are actually poorly absorbed through the intestinal wall. This is actually a common problem associated with plant polyphenols.

However, scientists in Italy have found a way to bond green tea to phospholipids. This stable complex is called a phytosome.

Phytosomes are 3-5 times better absorbed than the standard botanical form!

This is a major breakthrough is nutritional science and means that various plant compounds and herbs that were previous considered to have little or no beneficial effect may now prove to have some physiological benefit because of the improved absorption rate.

Even better still, is the fact that the level of EGCG found in the blood stream 4 hours after ingestion of the phytosome form is greater than the maximum level of EGCG found in the blood stream after ingestion of the botanical form. The level of EGCG from the botanical form was non-existent after 4 hours.

Published research results
of Phytosome Green Tea!

A research study was published on the health benefits of green tea in the phytosome form in the Alternative Medicine Review in 2009.

The researchers had two groups of obese patients. Both groups had 50 subjects each consisting of both males and females between the ages of 25 and 60.

Both groups followed a reduced-calorie diet (1850 cals for men and 1350 cals for women) for 90 days.

Group A was the ‘diet-only’ group whilst Group B was the ‘diet plus Phytosome Green Tea’ group.

compared to ‘diet only’

After 90 days Group A (diet only) lost about 5 kilograms on average, whilst Group B (diet plus Phytosome Green Tea) lost about 14 kilograms on average!

That is a significant difference between the two groups, especially after only 90 days of use!

Furthermore, the Body Mass Index (BMI) changes between the two groups was also significant. Group A’s average BMI decreased by 5, whilst Group B’s decreased by 14!

Body Mass Index is a measure of a person’s weight relative to their height. It is determined by calculating a person’s weight in kilograms divided by their height in metres squared [weight (kg) / height (m)2].

The waistline measurement reductions were also worthy of note. Group A had a 5% reduction, whilst Group B had a 10% reduction.

Improved blood lipid profiles
In addition to the impressive changes in weight, BMI and waistline measurement in the supplemented group, there were also impressive changes in blood lipids as well. These changes mean that significant reductions in heart disease risk in addition to improvements in overall health may occur by supplementing with Phytosome Green Tea.

For example, total cholesterol decreased by 25% in the supplemented group compared to 10% in the control group; total triglycerides decreased by 33% in the supplemented group compared to 20% in the control group; plasma LDL (‘bad’ cholesterol) decreased by more than 20% in the supplemented group compared to around 9% in the control group; and HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) increased in the supplemented group by more than 21% compared to 10% in the control group.

Reduced blood sugar and insulin levels
Fasting Blood sugar levels were also better in the supplemented group compared to the control group. Both levels went down by 10% and 8% respectively.

A reduced fasting blood sugar level means that insulin levels were also reduced and the body’s ability to burn fat as a fuel source would have improved significantly.

In fact, the researchers found that insulin decreased more than 36% in the supplemented group compared to almost 17% in the control group. This reduction of insulin may be another reason why the Phytosome Green Tea weight loss benefits were so significant.

Increased growth hormone production
Probably one of the most exciting results of this research, apart from the dramatic weight loss, is the fact that growth hormone production increased by 321%!

This is one of the major Phytosome Green Tea benefits! Growth hormone (GH) is one of the body’s most powerful lipolytic (fat-burning hormones). In addition to this, it provides major recuperative properties by helping to re-build body tissues like, bone, collagen and muscle. It is known to be a powerful anti-ageing hormone, which means that keeping levels high in the body may slow down the ageing process significantly.

Reduced cortisol production
Another important result of this research is the impact Phytosome Green Tea has on cortisol production in the body.

Cortisol is one of the most powerful catabolic hormones in the body. By reducing its production, a whole range of health benefits may be promoted. These include: improved insulin sensitivity, reduced muscle loss, reduced tissue breakdown, increased anabolic hormone production, etc.

The results of the study found that by supplementing with the Phytosome Green Tea cortisol may be reduced by more than 23% compared to the control group who had a reduction in cortisol of a little over 13%.

Obviously, the results of this study are very impressive, however, further research needs to be conducted in order to verify the Phytosome Green Tea benefits. The results are very exciting nonetheless and as a result, BCN are looking to access Phytosome Green Tea in Australia so as to make the health benefits of green tea available to everyone.
