Weight Loss and Health Facts

Turmeric extract is more effective than drugs for arthritis suffers!

A recent study published earlier this year in the journal Phytotherapy Research has found that one of the active ingredients in turmeric, curcumin, possesses potent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties that are superior to an anti-inflammatory drug!

Plus, the turmeric didn't cause the side effects that were associated with the drug! This is a great health tip for arthritis sufferers!

Ginger may be beneficial for diabetics

Researchers from the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos published a study in November 2011, which demonstrated that ginger helps to lower blood sugar, enhances insulin sensitivity and has high antioxidant activity in male rats. Even though the study was done using rats it is possible that similar effects will occur in humans when ginger is consumed regularly. This means it may be beneficial for people suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Rhodiola reduces stress after 3 days!

Researchers from the UK and Germany have found that treating subjects with Rhodiola rosea is effective at reducing life-stress symptoms in as little as 3 days and were able to do so to a clinically significant degree! Furthermore, there were no serious adverse side effects reported. This is great news for people experiencing high levels of stress in their life but who don't want to use medication.

Cinnamon lowers blood sugar levels in diabetics!

The results of a meta-analysis (combined results of several studies) published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in September 2011 have shown that whole cinnamon or a cinnamon extract is beneficial in lowering fasting blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. By keeping blood sugar levels stable through the daily use of cinnamon, in combination with other lifestyle factors, the symptoms associated with diabetes may be reduced significantly. This is one of the most important health facts for diabetics!

Garlic reduces heart disease risk

Researchers at the Loma Linda University in California have determined that several garlic supplements can suppress the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a strong indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. Oxidation of LDL ('bad') cholesterol appears to be a major contributor to an increased risk of heart disease rather than just LDL cholesterol itself. If you would like to find out additional strategies to help you lower cholesterol naturally, please visit: How to Lower Cholesterol Naturally!.

Berry fruits have a positive impact on human health

A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry has stated that there is an overwhelming body of research establishing the benefits provided by the dietary consumption of berry fruits. It states that these 'superfoods' improve human health, boost performance and prevent disease. This means that consumption of berries either fresh or in supplemental form is absolutely essential.

Curcumin: Potential anti-cancer benefits!

Researchers from the University of Tromso in Norway recently demonstrated that curcumin, the active ingredient in Turmeric, has anti-cancer properties!

Oxidative damage and inflammation are known to be strongly correlated with cancer as well as other degenerative diseases. Since curcumin is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, it is theorised to be useful for the preventionand/ or treatment of cancer.

Unfortunately, curcumin in its natural state is not very bioavailable (well-absorbed). Therefore, having curcumin complexed to other compounds that improve absorption, such as in the case of BCN's Relieve Turmeric Forte, will help to unlock all of the potential health benefits this amazing herb offers!

Ginger is beneficial for asthma sufferers

Researchers in the UK studying the effects of ginger on 30 adults with mild-to-moderate asthma found that after 3 months, those taking ginger had 'clinical improvements' in their asthma symptoms, their health was better, and they were coughing less.

Garlic prevents colds

Russian researchers conducted a study with over 600 people and found that those who were given a garlic supplement had four times fewer colds compared to those people who received the placebo. It is definitely a great supplement to take every day during winter!

Fennel may be useful in treating Alzheimer's disease

One of the active compounds in fennel appears to be able to improve the long-term memory in laboratory animals. It does this through the same mode of action as donepezil, a drug used to treat Alzheimer's disease. The mechanism through which fennel works is by boosting the levels of the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine.

Stomach ulcers can be treated with cloves

Helicobacter pylori is a bacteria that is linked to stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Conventional medical treatment to eradicate H. pylori from the body is only 80 to 90 percent effective. Plus, the bacteria are developing a resistance to the various antibiotics that are used.

A team of researchers in India however, have found that the active ingredient in cloves (eugenol) is effective at stopping 30 strains of H. pylori and did so 25 percent faster than amoxicillin. And the bacteria didn't develop a resistance to eugenol.

Antioxidants help to normalise blood glucose levels

Researchers in France earlier this year published an analysis of the literature relating to antioxidants from fruits and vegetables and their impact on blood glucose. What they found was that not only are antioxidants beneficial in protecting the body again free radicals but they also reverse insulin resistance and improve blood glucose levels.

Protein promotes weight loss

In 2008 the CSIRO reviewed the research relating to protein and weight loss and found that high protein meals are more satiating (appetite-satisfying) compared to high carbohydrate or high fat meals. They also noted improved body composition (more muscle, less fat) and greater lean mass retention with a higher protein intake. This means that weight-loss efforts may be improved by slightly increasing the protein portion of your meals and slightly reducing the fat and carbohydrate component. This is one of the most important dietary health facts to be aware of, especially if you want to lose weight!

Here's where to go for more weight loss facts!

Synephrine significantly increases metabolism

Researchers from Creighton University have found that synphrine, either alone or with other bioflavonoids, can significantly increase metabolic rate above the placebo. Synephrine is an alkaloid which comes from Citrus aurantium (Bitter orange) and is often used in weight-loss supplements.

However, since it is an expensive ingredient few companies provide it in therapeutic amounts in their products (they only list Citrus aurantium on their ingredients panel- not the level of active ingredient, synephrine) or they tend to use cheaper alternatives instead. XLR8 Thermogenic, on the other hand, contains the maximum amount of synephrine permitted by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia.

Prebiotics (fibre) improve health and weight-loss efforts

The Life Sciences Research Organisation have published a study that explains the health and weight-loss benefits of using prebiotics (fibre), which is the food for the gut bacteria. They state that prebiotics reduce the risk of obesity by promoting satiety and weight loss. Prebiotics also reduce the risk and severity of gastrointestinal infection and inflammation, including diarrhoea, inflammatory bowel disease, and ulcerative colitis as well as bowel function disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome. Prebiotics are found in BCN's Gastro Forte AG and DigestEZE.

Eating breakfast maintains weight-loss success

A study published in Obesity Research found that eating breakfast is a characteristic common to successful weight loss maintainers and may be a factor in their success. It is hypothesised that eating breakfast may have an impact on metabolism and may also be implicated in better control of daily calorie intake. This is one one the most important health facts for everyone to use!

Black pepper (piperine) inhibits fat cell generation

A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry earlier this year found that piperine strongly inhibited adipocyte (fat cell) development. Black pepper extracts are often included in fat burning supplements to improve absorption of the other ingredients as well as improve users' weight-loss efforts.

Turmeric may treat obesity and obesity-related diseases

Turmeric is a well-known herbal anti-inflammatory agent. Researchers from the National University in Korea have found that curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) interacts with several specific inflammatory proteins associated with obesity. They concluded that these findings may offer an additional strategy for the treatment and prevention of obesity and obesity-related diseases.

Eating breakfast may prevent obesity in children

Researchers from Greece have found that children who ate breakfast and had a high meal frequency were two times less likely to become overweight or obese compared to children who didn't eat breakfast and/ or had fewer than 3 meals a day.

Monounsaturated fatty acids in diet reduces liver fat in type 2 diabetes

In a recent study published in Diabetes Care, researchers found that subjects who had a diet that contained monounsaturated fatty acids (like olive oil) lost more fat from their liver compared to another group who consumed the same amount of calories but didn't have the fats.

This is simply another study that contradicts conventional wisdom that says we should cut all the fat from our diet.

3 x 20-minute sessions a week of high-intensity exercise achieve significant weight loss!

A study conducted earlier this year by researchers in Sydney found that as little as 3, 20-minute exercise session a week can achieve significant weight loss as long as the exercise being conducted is high-intensity exercise.

A high-fibre diet may assist weight loss

Researchers in Denmark published a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition with their results further reinforcing the benefits of a high-fibre diet in relation to weight loss.

Conclusive proof that exercise prevents osteoporosis

Last year researchers in Scotland conducted a meta-analysis (a review of a range of research studies) and found that exercise, particularly resistance exercise, has the potential to be a safe and effective way to prevent bone loss in postmenopausal women.

Curcumin reduces development of type 2 diabetes

A recent study published in the journal, Diabetes Care, has found that using curcumin over a period of 9 months significantly lowered the number of prediabetic people who developed diabetes. The study also found that treatment with Curcumin improves the overall functioning of the Beta cells in the pancreas (the cells responsible for producing insulin).

Metabolic syndrome may be treated by exercise and an increased protein intake

French researchers have found that metabolic syndrome, which is characterised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as being someone with diabetic symptoms and any two of the following: blood pressure greater than 140/90, triglycerides greater than 1.695 mmol/L, central obesity, microalbuminuria, may be improved when exercise is performed in conjunction with a higher protein intake.

Garlic prevent LDL Cholesterol oxidation

A study published in the journal, Atherosclerosis, has found that consuming a garlic supplement reduces the oxidation of LDL Cholesterol, and oxidised LDL is a risk factor for plaque formation and heart disease.

Compound in Rhodiola may improve skin

A study published in Biomedical and Environmental Sciences has demonstrated that one of the active ingredients derived from the herb rhodiola called salidroside, has the effect of preserving the skin cells' ability to reproduce. It has also been shown to reduce Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), which are a marker for ageing.

Fibre can also be used to cleanse the colon and stimulate the metabolism. Eating a diet high in fibre is a great way to help maintain healthy digestion; and using an herbal fibre cleanse once or twice a year can help detoxify the GI tract.

They noted a significant difference between the subjects and a control group when it came to satiety (feelings of fullness) and weight loss.

Berries may prevent Alzheimer's disease

Researchers have found that the consumption of berries protects the brain against the accumulation of toxic materials (Alzheimer's disease shows an increased amount of toxic protein in the brain). Apparently the phytonutrients present in berries promote 'autophagy', the brain's natural housekeeping mechanism.

Aerobic exercise reduces cancer risk

Research announced at the International Liver Conference earlier this year has found that performing aerobic exercise every day may significantly reduce the development of tumours in mice. Whilst there is no conclusive evidence in humans yet these results certainly look promising.

Spices improve lipid profiles

Not only are spices useful for enhancing the taste and appearance of food, but they also have an amazing array of health benefits. Researchers in India at the Central Food Technological Research Institute have found that turmeric, fenugreek, and ginger are among a group of spices that have the effect of lowering cholesterol levels. These same spices are contained in BCN's MultiSpice.

Turmeric extends lifespan

It has long been theorised that a diet rich in antioxidants is able to prolong lifespan. Now a study has found that the active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is able to significantly extend the lifespan of fruit flies. This effect results partly from curcumin's ability to enhance the activity of superoxide dismutase (a powerful antioxidant) in the body.

Theanine demonstrates various cognitive-enhancing benefits

Theanine, the amino acid found in green tea, has been shown to have some amazing benefits relating to brain function. It is able to exert calming and relaxing effects without causing drowsiness in conjunction with increased focus and attention.

Turmeric increases lifespan

Researchers in China have just published a study demonstrating that the active ingredients in turmeric have lifespan-extending effects on three different organisms. This means that these benefits may be extended to humans as well but it is yet to be proven.

Ginger may improve blood lipid profiles and lower blood sugar levels

A study published in 2012 in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine has shown that the regular consumption of ginger can help to improve blood lipid profiles and lower blood sugar levels. Ginger is one of the spices selected to be a component of BCN's MultiSpice because of the amazing health benefits it offers.

Ingredient in cloves prevent cancer metastasis

A study by researchers in Korea has shown that eugenol (an active ingredient in cloves) can inhibit the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), which is indicative of metastasis. Cloves are one of the ingredients in MultiSpice.

Prebiotics improve gut bacteria and the immune system

A study published in the journal Recent Patents on Inflammation & Allergy Drug Discovery has shown that prebiotics, like those found in Gastro Forte AG and DigestEZE, favours normal bacterial growth and impedes the growth of pathogenic organisms. They have also shown that prebiotics help to modulate gut-associated lymphoid tissues (GALT), improving the immune system.

Extracts from berries improve human health and prevent disease

Researchers in California have found that using a supplement containing berry extracts, similar to those in BCN's SuperFood Blend, can exhibit a broad spectrum of biomedical functions, including improving cardiovascular function, reducing oxidative stress, reducing inflammation, improving neuronal and cognitive brain functions, and improving eye health. Many of these benefits are believed to come from the various phytonutrients (nutrients from plants) they contain as well as the high oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value.

High protein, low glycaemic index diet helps keep the weight off

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a modest increase in protein intake and modest reduction in glycaemic index helps maintain weight loss. A simple way to increase your protein intake is by simply having a protein shake with your mid-morning or mid-afternoon meal. BCN's ProBlend Dairy Free is a good example.

Fat burners work!

Researchers at the Department of Health and Exercise Science have demonstrated that using a thermogenic supplement may significantly increase energy expenditure as well as the utilisation of stored fat as an energy source over a 3-hour period after consumption.

Green tea compound helps stabilise blood sugar

A study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research has found that epigallocatechin-3-galate (EGCG), which is found in green tea, helps to reduce the blood sugar spike that occurs following the consumption of starchy food. An elevated blood sugar level has been implicated in diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Underactive thyroid more common in elderly

Sub-optimal thyroid function appears to more common in the elderly according to a study published in the Journal of Family Practice. This means that even thought the patients in the study did not require medication, their thyroid glands were not functioning as well as they could have been.

The researchers stated that the result was not related to age or co-existing diseases. Therefore, nutritional factors are likely to have played a role. This is where products like BCN's Thyron may be helpful.

Turmeric assists weight loss

A recent study published in January 2013 by researchers at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the State University of New York have found that curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) reduces obesity. The mechanism of action is multi-factorial.

Since obesity is characterised by low-grade inflammation, resulting from the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines from white adipose tissue, reducing inflammation may assist with reduction of obesity. Curcumin also inhibits macrophage infiltration of adipocytes (fat cells) and inhibits adipocyte differentiation.

Weight loss may reduce diabetes and heart disease incidence An international team of researchers have concluded that a modest weight loss of 4-5 kilograms can significantly reduce a person's risk of diabetes and heart disease. They suggested a simple moderate reduction in food intake and increase in activity.

Staying up late may contribute to obesity

A recent study published in the journal, Obesity, has stated that the body's internal clock, the circadian system, increases hunger and cravings for sweet, salty and starchy foods in the evening. Therefore, going to bed earlier (combined with better quality sleep) may be a great way to assist weight loss!

'Good' bacteria in the gut may help weight loss

A 'good' bacteria present in the intestinal wall appears to have a favourable effect on weight loss. Researchers found that administering the bacteria (probiotic) to mice being fed a high-fat diet reduced fat development and the associated metabolic defects. This is just another reason to ensure you have an adequate intake of probiotics and prebiotics (food for 'good' bacteria) in your diet. BCN's DigestEZE and GastroForte AG are both great sources of prebiotics.

Hormones may have a greater effect on weight loss than first thought

Researchers at the Nutrition Science Initiative believe that what we eat has a far greater impact on our ability to lose weight compared to the simple 'calories in vs. calories out' model of weight loss. They theorise that a high carbohydrate intake and its corresponding effect on hormones, like insulin, has the greatest impact on obesity and on our ability to lose weight.

Stress less, lose weight

Researchers in Greece have found that reducing stress can have a significant affect on a person's ability to lose weight. Therefore, using various stress-reduction strategies may be a suitable adjunct to a weight-loss program. These may include relaxation techniques, meditation, breathing exercises, or simply using herbs that help the body deal with stress more effectively. Rhodiola rosea, contained in BCN's Rhodiola Advanced is a good example of a powerful stress-relieving herb.

Regular exercise prevents disease

A review published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal stated that there is irrefutable evidence supporting the fact that regular exercise is able to prevent the development of several chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity, depression, and osteoporosis.

Furthermore, there appears to be a direct correlation between the amount of exercise being performed and health status, whereby increases in physical activity leads to further improvements in health status.

Fruit and vegetable consumption provides protection against leading diseases

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has confirmed that the regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. It is believed to result from the significant amounts of bioactive compounds contained in the foods.

People who don't consume enough fruits and vegetables each day may benefit from using a supplement containing adequate amounts of fruit and vegetable extracts. BCN's SuperFood Blend is a good example.

Fish oil is essential during pregnancy

Several research studies now show a strong relationship between omega-3 oils, particularly DHA, which is one of the components of fish oil, and brain development. Since brain development undergoes its most rapid and complex development during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first two years after birth it is essential that a woman supplements her diet with a significant amount of fish oil in order to provide her baby with a sufficient amount of omega-3s, and DHA, in order to optimise their brain development.

Rhodiola improves memory and concentration

Scientists have discovered that a moderate dose of a rhodiola supplement improved learning and retention after 24 hours. Furthermore, daily supplementation for a period of 10 days improved long-term memory.

This study demonstrates rhodiola's benefits for students preparing for exams. BCN's Rhodiola Advanced contains standardised doses of the active ingredients in rhodiola.

Theanine reduces high blood pressure

Japanese researchers have found that theanine, an amino acid from green tea, reduces blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner in subjects with elevated blood pressure. This means the larger the dose the more significant the reduction. However, in subjects with normal blood pressure there was no change. Theanine is available in BCN's Tranquil Mind.

Weight loss may improve sleep quality

A review of all studies regarding weight loss and sleep apnoea has determined that losing weight will in fact improve a person's quality of sleep. However, weight loss was not adequate in relieving all respiratory problems.

Theanine may enhance weight loss

Researchers in Japan discovered that mice fed theanine over a 16-week period had a significant reduction in bodyweight and fat mass. However, the mechanism through which it works is yet to be established.

In humans it is theorised by Byron Richards, a well-known nutritionist from the US, that theanine's ability to promote weight loss may be due to its ability to improve sleep quality (which impacts a range of hormones), and its ability to reduce the effects of stress on the body.

Theanine is contained in BCN's Tranquil Mind.

Moderate weight loss may reduce the conversion of T4 into T3!

Researchers from the US recently published a study in the journal, Thyroid, stating that moderate weight loss has a negative impact on the peripheral conversion (i.e. in the liver) of T4 into T3. Since T3 is the ‘active' thyroid hormone these results mean that further weight loss may become more difficult.

By providing your body with the nutrients it needs to optimise this process you may be able to enhancing the conversion of T4 into T3 and improve your weight-loss efforts. A simple way to do this is by using a product like BCN's Thyron.

Cinnamon may assist weight loss

Metabolic Syndrome is a condition characterised by elevated blood sugar levels, being overweight (particularly carrying excess weight around the abdomen), having high blood pressure, and having high triglycerides (fats in the blood stream).

In one study involving people with Metabolic Syndrome, researchers found that after three months of using a cinnamon supplement , subjects had lower blood sugar and triglyceride levels, lower blood pressure, decreased body fat, and an increase in lean tissue, i.e. muscle tissue.

Cinnamon is one of the spices contained in BCN's MultiSpice.

Higher amounts of exercise is best for long-term weight loss

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that people who are encouraged to perform a larger amount of exercise each week (2,500 calories/wk) achieved better long-term weight loss (i.e. they maintaining the exercise habit for longer) compared to people who were recommended to perform standard amounts of exercise each week (1,000 calories/ wk).

Effects of tea consumption on attention and mood

Researchers from Holland have recently reviewed the studies conducted on the acute effects of tea, more specifically the ingredients theanine and caffeine, with regards to attention and mood. They concluded that tea consumption does increase alertness and arousal in addition to improving work performance and creativity.

Theanine is contained in BCN's Tranquil Mind and 2 capsules has the equivalent theanine content of more than 25 cups of green tea!

Turmeric reduces the free radicals produced during exercise

A recent study conducted in Japan has found that supplementing with a turmeric supplement pre-exercise has the effect of reducing the free radicals produced from the exercise session. This is a significant finding and means that recovery from exercise may be much faster if people take a turmeric supplement before any training session or game of sport. BCN's Relieve Turmeric Forte and InflammaCALM both contain highly absorbable forms of turmeric.

Is krill oil really better than fish oil?

Studies have shown that krill oil provides the same benefits as fish oil with regards to serum lipids, oxidative stress, and inflammation, but at a lower dose. It appears that 40% less krill oil is required compared to fish oil in order to obtain these benefits.

However, when the cost and level of active ingredients (EPA and DHA) are taken into consideration it appears that fish oil may be the better option!

For example, a krill oil product and a fish oil product from the same company were compared. The krill oil product cost $29.95 for 30, 1,000mg capsules with each capsule containing 140mg of EPA and 70mg of DHA. The fish oil on the other hand cost $14.95 for 400 capsules with each capsule containing 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA.

This means each capsule of krill oil costs just under $1.00 and each capsule of fish oil costs around 3.7 cents! Therefore, not only is fish oil significantly cheaper, but it also provides higher levels of the active ingredients!

So even if krill oil is 1.5 times better than fish oil at equivalent dosages, fish oil is 27 times cheaper with a higher level of active ingredients per capsule, making it a far better option.

Cinnamon may improve fertility

A small study presented at the International Federation of Fertility Societies and American Society for Reproductive Medicine found that women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a relatively common condition that affects menstrual cycles and fertility, were able to improve their fertility by using a cinnamon supplement.

The study found that the women taking the cinnamon supplement had twice the number of menstrual cycles compared to the placebo group over a period of 6 months. Even though there were only 11 women using the cinnamon supplement, two of the women in the group became pregnant within 3 months!

Cinnamon is well-known to improve insulin resistance, which is a common problem associated with PCOS. Cinnamon is one of the 5 spice found in BCN's MultiSpice product.

Green tea- a proven weight-loss performer!

Green tea continues to prove itself as a great fat-burning, weight-loss compound with an ever-growing body of research to back up its effectiveness. Its benefits appear to come from several of its active ingredients, collectively known as catechins. These catechins promote fat oxidation in the body as well as boost metabolic rate. Some studies show it may even improve insulin sensitivity, which may indirectly increase weight-loss efforts as well.

Green tea is a component of BCN's XLR8 Thermogenic, one of the most effective fat burning products on the market today.

Drinking water for weight loss

The common recommendation in the fitness industry is to drink plenty of water to assist weight loss. However, until recently there was very little evidence to support this recommendation.

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research has shown that drinking 500mls of water 30 minutes prior to each of your main meals helps to lose weight, lower Body Mass Index (BMI), and reduce subcutaneous fat levels.
