What is Healthy Dieting?

First of all, let's consider a definition of 'healthy dieting'. According to the Australian Oxford Dictionary the word, 'healthy', means 'having, showing, or producing good health' and the word, 'dieting' means 'to restrict oneself to a special diet, especially in order to control one's weight'.

Initially, this may seem counter-intuitive. If you reduce or restrict your food intake you are likely to limit your intake of the essential nutrients that your body requires in order to function at optimum levels, and lacking essential nutrients will certainly not produce good health. However, if you are selective about the types of foods being eaten then it is possible to actually reduce your food intake slightly and also have a high intake of nutrients.

Furthermore, research with many of different species of animals has shown that a reduced food intake actually increased lifespan and improved body functioning as long as nutrients weren't restricted. Therefore, it makes sense that some degree of food control is put in place. However, it is also necessary that no nutrient deficiency, hunger or health problems result from the reduced food intake.

Accordingly, you must emphasise foods that provide a high level of nutrients without being loaded with calories. Fruits and vegetables are a good example of foods that fulfil this criteria and therefore, should be emphasised in the diet.

The word 'dieting' itself has a very negative connotation in society. For most people it conjurs up images of hunger, starvation and tiredness. However, the word, 'diet' actually comes from the Greek word, 'diaita' and means way of life (lifestyle). This is a far better definition than one that suggests restriction.

Healthy Dieting

Therefore, the true meaning of healthy dieting is 'healthy way of life' and doesn't require restriction or starvation at all! This means that weight loss without dieting (our idea of dieting) should be totally possible as long as you create a lifestyle for yourself. That is why I recommend a long-term, sustainable approach to nutrition.

If you really want to lose weight without dieting then you need to learn the correct principles, select the principles that suit you and your lifestyle and finally incorporate the principles into your lifestyle and make them permanent lifestyle habits. If you follow this very simple approach to nutrition you will be able to easily lose weight without dieting (by our original definition) and will have created your very own weight-loss nutritional plan.
