All healthy diets must follow a similar format if they are going to be useable by people wanting to lose weight.

In this article we will examine the structure of a weight loss diet plan in order to make it a long-term, sustainable approach to nutrition that people can use to not only lose weight and achieve their weight-loss goal but more importantly, keep the weight off long term.

Plus, these principles ensure that your lifestyle doesn't have to change dramatically even if you're the only person in your family who wants to lose weight.

The foods must be easy to obtain

If you want to follow a weight loss diet plan, it is absolutely imperative that you are able to do so for the rest of your life! Therefore, it must provide you with the foods you currently eat and enjoy and that you can easily obtain.

This means that all the foods in weight loss diet plan should be easily accessible from supermarkets, fruit and vegetable stores and restaurants. This also means that the foods should be normal, 'everyday' foods and not 'special' in any way.

For example, we would all love to be able to eat organic foods all the time but their availability and cost make them difficult for many people to obtain or a regular basis.

The meals in healthy diets must be easy to prepare

All the meals in any weight loss diet plan must be quick and easy to prepare. This ensures that anyone can do it and that they can do it long term. This is an essential factor for a weight loss diet plan these days simply because with our busy lifestyles, meal preparation and consumption has become quite chore.

This is one of the reasons why fast food outlets are so popular. Even though they don't have a place in a weight loss diet plan (except on your 'Treat Day'), they fulfil our need to have quick, easy, convenient and good-tasting meals.

Since the food we eat on a regular basis influences our health, our energy levels and our ability to lose weight, it is important that we are selective about the foods we eat and that we make wise food choices. Therefore, the foods and meals we have must be easy to prepare.

A weight loss diet plan must contain foods that you currently eat and enjoy

If you want to get results from a weight loss diet plan then it must provide you with the same foods that you currently consume on a regular basis. Of course, the portion sizes may be reduced, what you eat the foods with may change slightly, and you may have to reduce your intake of some foods, but as a general rule you should be able to eat very similarly to your current dietary habits.

Following a weight loss diet plan that contains the foods you currently eat and enjoy means there is a much greater likelihood of long-term compliance as well as sustained results.

You must be able to eat the same foods as your family

A weight loss diet plan must provide you with meal options that are suitable for all members of your family regardless of whether or not they want to lose weight. The concept of having to prepare two meals in the evening for dinner, one for you and one for your family, simply doesn't make sense. A healthy diet plan must provide you with healthy, good-tasting meals that everyone can enjoy.

Healthy diets must include foods that provide your body with good nutrition

The foods in any weight loss diet plan must provide your body with a full spectrum of nutrients. This will help your body function at optimum levels as well as achieve your weight-loss goal without starving.
