How Do You Burn Fat?
Here’s a summary of how your body burns fat… and how you can make it burn fat faster!
One of the most common questions asked in the fitness industry is, how do you burn fat?
In this article we will cover the mechanism by which our bodies mobilise and utilise fat as a fuel source as well as how we can speed up the process so we can lose fat (and weight) faster!
The human body is a dynamic structure. It is constantly building up and breaking down tissues all day long. In addition to this, it is constantly burning energy and this energy comes from the food we eat and from the stores of fuel in our body.
The human body uses a combination of carbohydrate, protein and fat for energy. However, the primary sources are carbohydrate and fat.
How do you burn fat step 1: Reduce insulin secretion
For our purposes we want to emphasise a grater proportion of fat to be used as a fuel source and less carbohydrate and protein. The best way to do this is by reducing
insulin
secretion by the pancreas.
You can easily reduce insulin secretion by controlling your source of
carbohydrate.
There is no need to completely cut out carbs from your diet because that approach is not a ‘sustainable lifestyle’.
However, by simply being aware of your
source of carbohydrates,
you will be able to keep insulin low, which will then make your body a more efficient fat burner.
Another simple way to keep insulin low is to use
glucose disposal agents.
These compounds may mimic the action of insulin or act as insulin co-factors, which improves insulin’s functioning in the body and best of all, keeps insulin’s production low.

How do you burn fat step 2: Increase the activity of Hormone Sensitive Lipase (HSL)
There are a number of hormones that can assist the body in mobilising fat from the fat stores by stimulating Hormone Sensitive Lipase (HSL). They are:
•Epinephrine and norepinephrine

•Glucagon
•Thyroid hormones
•Cortisol

Each of these hormones stimulates a compound in fat cells called cyclic AMP, which in tun, activates an enzyme in fat cells called, Hormone Sensitive Lipase (HSL).
HSL stimulates the release of triglycerides (stored fat) into the blood stream in the form of fatty acids and glycerol. The fatty acids are bound to albumin because they are not water soluble and are then sent around the body to the active tissues like muscles and liver, where they may be used as a fuel source.
The glycerol component (which makes up the ‘backbone’ of the triglyceride) may enter the process of glycolysis, where it is essentially used as a fuel source like glucose.
How do you burn fat step 3: Increase the production of the catecholamines
There are a number of ways you can increase the body’s production of these fat-burning hormones. We will examine each hormone individually and then finally tie all the activities together to show you how to dramatically boost your fat-burning capabilities by at least 3 times!
The Catecholamines (Epinepherine and Norepinepherine)
These hormones are produced in the adrenal medulla (the middle part of the adrenal glands), which sit on top of the kidneys.
They are stimulated by exercise, particularly intense exercise. This of course, makes resistance training an important part of the fat-burning process.
Interestingly, the production of the catecholamines decreases over time, which means it is important to keep exercise sessions relatively brief (an hour or less) in order to gain maximum benefit from the catecholamine production.

How do you burn fat step 4: Increase the production of growth hormone
Growth hormone

(an amino acid) has also been shown to stimulate growth hormone release.
How do you burn fat step 5: Increase the production of glucagon
Glucagon
is insulin’s antagonist hormone. It is produced in the pancreas, as is insulin, however, it is produced by the alpha cells rather than the beta cells, which produce insulin.
Glucagon stimulates liver breakdown of glycogen to glucose and also stimulates the gluconeogenic (production of glucose from amino acids) process in the liver by increasing the uptake of amino acids into the liver.
Glucagon also has fat-burning effects by activating an enzyme, which stimulates cyclic AMP, which of course then activates HSL.
Glucagon release is directly related to the level of glucose in the blood stream. As exercise continues, blood glucose levels fall and more glucagon is released into the blood stream.
Also, protein induces glucagon release from the pancreas.
How do you burn fat step 6: Increase the production of thyroid hormones
The
thyroid gland
produces two hormones,
thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
In addition to their fat-mobilising effects, they also increase the metabolism of all body cells. This means they increase the rate at which the body burns fuel.
Exercises stimulates greater production of the thyroid hormones as does supplementation with specific nutrients, iodine and selenium, which are contained in BCN’s
