Help received with thanks

Hi there,


I have always wondered why i was putting on weight when i thought i was doing everything right. I was wrong! I went from 1 maybe two meals a day to 6 and jumped straight into the small meals. This along with exercise was not enough as i was still putting weight on. I will use the steps you have outlined in this to help me change my weight from obese to slim and healthy.

need help

I have had a gastric band for 24 days now and until now i have lost 20 kg, but the problem is that I don't know what is the best food for me and I would appreciate any advice.

Hi Mutaz,

Congratulations on your weight loss so far! 20kgs in 24 days is a very rapid weight loss indeed. However, I must admit that I think that it is too fast to lose weight. 0.5-1kg per week is a much 'safer' weight loss.

Furthermore, I do not agree with this approach to losing weight. I personally believe that there are far better, non-invasive ways to lose weight without resorting to such a drastic approach.

Nevertheless, I have spoken with several people over the years who have had this operation done and whilst I am not a doctor and cannot offer medical advice, I do offer a few suggestions that you may find useful. However, before using any of the recommendations here, always speak with your doctor first.

Firstly, I am aware that it is very difficult to eat anything after having this operation done. As a result, you have lost a massive amount of weight simply by starving your body!

The biggest problem with this is that your body will be severely lacking in a whole range of essential nutrients. Therefore, you need to find a way to get these nutrients from food into your body. I think the best way to go is to simply steam your vegetables as you would normally and then blend them up with some water to make a vegetable smoothie.

I know it doesn't sound too appetising but you must get some nutrient-dense foods into your body and vegetables are the best way to go.

Protein shakes are also a great option if you are having trouble holding food in your stomach as many people do when they have this operation.

Mutaz, I would also try and find out what vegetables, fruits and other foods you are able to consume normally so you can then plan a relatively normal diet for yourself.

Low fat food

Your weight loss plan sounds so good but I'm still finding it hard to get started and stick with it. I think planning must be an important part of the procedure. I was interested in the low fat food making you fatter as I buy nearly all low fat food.

I only need to lose 5 kilos but I've had the same 5 kilos for about 5 years to lose! When I do lose it, it comes back, and I store all the fat around my stomach. I've heard that excercise concentrating on the problem area does not help either. Is that true?

Since you only have 5 kilos to lose it should actually be quite easy for you to get it off and keep it off long term by simply making a few simple lifestyle changes.

Of course, you can't make the necessary lifestyle changes, lose the weight and then go back to previous lifestyle habits without the weight coming back on as well!

Plus, you're right! Sport reduction does not work. This is where people perform countless sit-ups in order to try and burn the fat that overlies their stomach- it is a physiological impossibility.

Thanks for the article. I have struggled with my weight since having kids and haven't been able to lose the extra kilos I put on whilst pregnant. Hopefully now I can put that behind me and get back to my "normal" size.
