diets and diet food make you fat

by Jay
(Australia)

This article is brilliant! I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes and changed just one small thing in my diet and without trying the weight is falling off at 1kg a week.

Although weight loss isn't recommended when pregnant, I am overweight and I honestly can't stop the weight from dropping off!

And guess what! I've been eating lots of yummy foods like ice cream and chocolate and even a little KFC. I even switched to full fat milk and yogurt because they actually contain less carbs than the diet versions.

All I've done to my diet is moderated the amount of carbs I eat to less than 30g per meal or snack, eating 5 times a day at regular intervals.

Basically monitoring my blood sugar levels after each meal has taught me what I can and can't eat.

For years I've tried every diet and my weight hasn't budged. Now I'm just following a regulated carb, low GI diet and I barely notice the changes to be honest.(mostly just changed the times I eat and switched real sugar with fake sugar options and switched bread to dark grainy bread and stopped going to bakeries and I don't have to weigh and measure food or count calories at all!)

I couldn't believe that I was actually losing the weight so I was googling around and found this article which is so easy to understand I don't know why most people don't know this and my friends struggling on atkins diets and shakes would never believe me!

With all the low sugar options out there It's not hard to still have yummy snacks. (diabetic chocolate is awesome and has less than 1g of carb per serve) I was actually surprised I could eat a massive bowl of oats with milk for breakfast and not effect my blood sugar levels yet one glass of zero fat milk would send my levels sky high!

But overall low GI foods usually contain less fat too so it makes sense to stick to it really. I guess it would put a lot of diet companies out of business if everyone knew how easy it really was to lose weight. ;)

Hi Jay,

Great to hear from you and thanks for your fantastic comments!

You're absolutely right! It isn't hard to lose weight at all, but there is so much mis-information out there with regards to nutrition that most people are utterly confused about what they need to do.

Congratulation on your great results too and I wish you all the very best for the future.

Regards,

Steve.

shared meals

I had never heard that before and think it is a very good tip. Meals without a variety of nutrient types always leave me feeling unsatisfied anyway.

A good reminder of the broader health picture

by Leanne Bird

I'm currently using hypnosis and support from friends to get healthy without 'dieting'. I still incorporate principles learned from 'Look Good, Feel Great', particularly to stabilise my energy through the day.

As I've recently stopped having sugar in my coffee, it's good to be reminded of the effects of sugar and high carb foods as well as other helpful strategies.

High blood sugar readings

by Christine
(Newcastle NSW Australia)

For the last 2 months I have been excercising at least 5 days a week for a least 1/2 hour each session at a gym. I also started cutting back my bread intake (multigrain) and have reduced my carbohydrate intake and my total food intake.

Previously I was eating cakes, biscuits, chocolates, pies, hot chips, cold chips and totally not exercising. The results after 2 months are shocking and I don't understand why.

However your article has given me some tips. My blood sugar went from 6 to high 7s to 9. I lost a small amount of weight 2.2Kg and 21cm (over entire body.) My body fat increased (the gym has a body fat monitor).

My weight loss is very slow. My resting heart rate is 52. At the gym I battle to get it up to 100 even though I'm going flat out on the machines and jumping and waving my arms around on the pads in between each machine. I think I may have cut back too much and am not eating enough also not enough fat and fibre.

I prepare most of my food and make it fresh where possible, not from packets or tins.

high blood sugar and slow weight loss
by: Steve

Hi Christine,

Nice to hear from you but I'm sorry to hear about your situation.

Firstly, I'd just like to say that you must ignore the bodyfat scales at your gym! They are hopelessly inaccurate! It is virtually impossible to have lost weight and cms and to have put on bodyfat! Don't worry about those damn things! Bodyfat scales have caused more grief and frustration in gyms around the world than anything else I know of.

Next, the fact that you can't increase your heart rate above 100 bpm is a real concern. Are you using any medication, i.e. beta blockers?

Also, other medications may slow down your weight-loss efforts too. The contraceptive pill, antidepressants, diabetic meds and many others will affect your ability to lose weight.

If you would like to send through your current weight-loss plan I am happy to review it for you and offer any suggestions where necessary.

I wish you the greatest success.

Cheers,

Steve.
