How to Prevent Osteoporosis
It is important to learn exactly how to prevent osteoporosis, especially as we age. The fact is, any weight-bearing exercise can help prevent osteoporosis. These include any exercise that works against gravity, such as, brisk walking, jogging, dancing, tennis, jumping, stair climbing, netball or resistance exercise. These types of exercise should be included as a regular part of your lifestyle.
In addition to weight-bearing exercises, balance exercises and stretching exercises are also beneficial. The balance exercises can improve your stability and help prevent falls, which is important because falls may cause fractures. The stretching exercises help to increase your flexibility which increases the range of motion around a joint. Flexibility tends to decrease as we age. Stretching exercises also help to increase blood flow to working muscles and therefore improve circulation. This may also improve the transport of all the necessary nutrients (minerals and protein) to the bones themselves for continued bone growth.
