Low carb diet plan for weight loss

by Anna Green
(WA)

Your advice is well researched. It looks like it is practical and easy to follow. I have tried many diets but from experience know that refined carbohydrates are a big problem for myself and feel that I have become addicted to them as well as the sugar content they have. Your book has good advice for which I am very interested to read more and get myself started on the way to a new and healthier lifestyle. It is very encouraging.

by Carole

Can you please advise why if I have cut out all bad carbs except for some vegetables from my diet I am still not losing weight. My diet consists of protein powder mixed with psyllium husks, slippery elm powder and LSA mix and berry's for breakfast, lunch is soup with meat, carrot, celery and cabbage, dinner is meat and carrots and broccoli.

low carb diet but still no weight loss
by: Steve

Hi Carole,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, but I have to admit, it is not uncommon.

Here are the possible reasons why you're still not losing weight weight despite a low calorie and carbohydrate intake:

1. Your metabolism is very slow. Possibly as a result of a too-severe calorie deficit.
2. You don't have much lean body mass (i.e. muscle).
3. Your medications are impeding your weight-loss efforts.
4. You have a medication condition that is stopping you from losing weight (i.e. liver dysfunction, thyroid problems, mitichondrial dysfunction, etc.)
5. You don't exercise.

Have a serious think about these areas and if you think that one or more of these may be an issue for you, let me know and we can take the necessary steps from there.

All the best Carole!

Regards,

Steve.

Blood lactate concentrations

by Justin Monaco
(Perth Australia)

I am an elite football player and am concerned with my lactic build up.

I had a VO2max assessment done and below I have copied and pasted what they have diognosed.

Please find attached the results letter from your recent VO2max assessment.

I think we may have found your problem, you produce some very serious blood lactate concentrations very early on during exercise. This means that I'm not really able to make an accurate assessment of your lactate threshold because your lactate was very high even in the first workload and then continued above what we would expect during the test making the curve very hard to analyse.

I attempted to assess the gas variables to help with the assessment but the result still comes out as unclear. If I had to be pushed to make a decision I would predict that your lactate threshold would be somewhere around the 14 km.hr workload.

Your VO2max was good and certainly puts you in the range that we would typically see from WCE players.

Can you suggest what I can do to rectify this problem.

Kind regards,

Justin Monaco

how to lower blood lactate levels
by: Steve

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your question and congratulations on your achievements so far.

I will say right upfront that I am certainly not an expert in this field, but I may be able to provide you with some insights based on my knowledge of human physiology.

Firstly, since your Vo2max results are impressive means that you have a great ability to take in oxygen into the lungs.

Since oxygen breaks down lactate (lactic acid) you would assume that you levels would be low early on in a maximal exercise performance test.

Unfortunately though, this is not this case. Why?

Here are a couple of possibilities that you may want to discuss with an exercise physiologist with experience in this area:

1. You have a very high proportion of fast twitch muscle fibres, which means you may generate a lot of power but also high amounts of lactic acid. Justin, are you unusually strong for your age?

2. The intra-muscular circulation is poor for some reason. I don't know what may cause this.

3. Your blood levels of haemoglobin are low. This is the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells. So even though you can take in large amounts of oxygen to your lungs, it is not attaching to the haemoglobin in your red blood cells.

There may be some other causes as well that I don't know about.

Here are a couple of solutions:

1. Use beta alanine, which is a great lactic acid buffer. creatine may also work well for this purpose.

2. Use an arginine-based supplement that increases nitric oxide production in your body. This will improve blood flow to your working muscles.

I hope this helps Justin.

Let me know how you go.

Regards,

Steve.

Lower carbs produced good result.

by Kay
(Perth)

Your very helpful article regarding Lower Carb Diets has proved effective in levelling my blood sugar. Since having 5 small meals per day and including protein with each meal I have not experienced the symptoms of low blood sugar that has been a problem for years. Your book 'Look Good Feel Great' has helped enormously. Thank you.
