The Importance of Low Carb Meals

Low carb meals are essential for type 2 diabetics if they are serious about overcoming the condition. Unfortunately though, it appears that most conventional dieticians and nutritionists as well as doctors keep recommending the same old high-carb, low-fat approach combined with a controlled calorie intake.
Whilst this approach may be marginally effective for some people suffering from the disease (simply because they're reducing the food intake), it isn't likely to work for most type 2 diabetics because a high carbohydrate intake still invokes an insulin response every time a meal is consumed.
If a diabetic is having 5 or 6 small meals a day, this means they should have around 10 grams of carbs or less per meal. This equates to 1/2 a banana, an orange, 1 rice cake, 200mls of low-fat milk, 100mls of fruit juice, 50g steamed sweet potato, 50g sweet corn, 100g peas, and lots of the low-density vegetables like, carrot, green beans, tomato, cucumber, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower, bean sprouts, spinach, etc.
It is best for type 2 diabetics to avoid the high-density carbohydrate sources like, bread, pasta, rice and cereals until they have overcome the condition. After that they can slowly re-introduce carbohydrates back into their diet but still have some meals that are low in carbs.
However, they must still control their intake of carbohydrates somewhat (as should most people) and should also incorporate other lifestyle habits that are beneficial in keeping their blood sugar level stable. For example, resistance exercise, aerobic exercise and the occasional use of glucose disposal agents such as those contained in GI Factor would definitely be beneficial.
Type 2 diabetics should focus on having more protein and good fats in their low carb meals. By doing this they can easily keep their blood sugar level stable, insulin low and can easily keep their appetite under control. Eating this way may require more planning and preparation of meals but when it comes to your health, it is definitely time well spent.
The main reason why low carb meals are beneficial for diabetics is simply because they help to keep insulin low. Since type 2 diabetes is characterised by insulin resistance, in order to reverse the condition, the receptors on the cell membranes need to be encouraged to 'open up' to insulin again. This may be done by using the strategies mentioned earlier, particularly by eating meals that are low in carbs.
An easy way to create meals that are low in carbs is to start by being aware of the macronutrients (carbohydrate, protein and fat) contained in most common foods. In my e-book, Look Good, Feel Great! I have created a Macronutrient Information Table that contains groupings of foods based on their predominant macronutrient. I also break carbs into high, medium and low-density groups. The approximate calorie contents and grams of all 3 macronutrients are also included for each food. This makes the process of creating low carb meals much easier. There are also some sample meal options but these provide a more balanced macronutrient profile (as opposed to being low carb meals), which is a more long-term sustainable approach to nutrition for people who want to lose weight and keep it off long term.
If you are diabetic, then another great e-book I recommend is How To Reverse Diabetes Now! It will provide you with detailed information about how to overcome diabetes quickly and easily.
