The thyroid gland produces the hormone thyroxine, which is responsible for stimulating the metabolism of all body cells. A faster metabolism obviously accelerates fat burning and weight loss in the body.


Since it plays a pivotal role in helping the body burn fat, maintaining its optimum functioning with natural thyroid remedies is vitally important. The thyroid gland requires iodine and selenium (along with some other minerals) in order to function effectively and a low iodine and selenium intake may reduce its functioning capacity, resulting in a slow metabolism.

Research has shown that iodine supplements can boost the metabolism of people with an underactive thyroid gland by helping to achieve a normal thyroid range. Iodine supplementation has also been shown to increase thyroid activity above ‘normal’ levels in people with a normal functioning thyroid.

Calorie restriction (dieting) may also reduce the body’s production of thyroid hormones resulting in a depressed metabolism. Additionally, a reduced calorie intake as well as an inadequate selenium intake decreases the conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3- another thyroid hormone), which is about five times more active than T4.

The conversion of T4 into T3 occurs in both the thyroid gland and the liver. In the liver the conversion process is dependent on the level of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) present.

A high level of ATP in the liver means more T4 is converted into T3. When calories are restricted however, the level of ATP in the liver falls, which means that the conversion of T4 to T3 decreases substantially.

This is one reason why a ‘Treat Day’ is beneficial. It replenishes the ATP in the liver to ensure maximum conversion of T4 to T3, which helps people achieve a normal thyroid range. People on calorie-restricted nutritional plans designed to accelerate weight loss (even if they have a ‘Treat Day’) will certainly benefit from natural thyroid remedies like iodine and selenium supplements, which are a perfect thyroid booster.
