The Top Superfoods
For You!

top superfoods

The top superfoods are foods that contain exceptionally high levels of antioxidants. They are generally fruits or berries that have deep, rich colours. The colours are indicative of ‘phytonutrients’, which are nutrients from plants.

Nutritional science is only just starting to discover the benefits that may be obtained from phytonutrients. Compounds such as, anthocyanins, carotenoids, anthraquinones, organic acids and proanthocyanins, which include polyphenols and flavanoids are powerful phytonutrients that are contained in the top superfoods.

These have now been studied quite extensively and are proven to have powerful protective and health-enhancing effects in the human body. Of course, as more research is conducted even more health benefits will be discovered.

Considering the high level of antioxidants the top superfoods contain, it is important to include them in your diet on a daily basis. Antioxidants help the body reduce the damage caused by free radicals, which are highly reactive atoms or molecules that mainly come from our environment. They react with, or oxidise, nearby cells or molecules, negatively affecting their function and accelerating the ageing process.

Our body is bombarded by free radicals every day. In fact, they may be present in the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Furthermore, the chemicals in our air, water or food may cause free radicals to be produced in our body. The human body also produces free radicals through normal metabolic processes.

In order to reduce the impact free radicals have on our body, we must consume an adequate amount of antioxidants every day and the best way to do this is by consuming concentrated forms of superfoods as a supplement.

Why supplemental forms of
top superfoods are best

Supplemental forms of antioxidants are far better than simply consuming the foods themselves simply because the supplements are far more concentrated. In order to obtain the same level of antioxidants that are contained in the superfood powder supplements far too much food would have to eaten.

For example, 1 teaspoon of BCN’s Super 7 Blend has more antioxidant content than all of the following foods combined: 1 apple, 40g red grapes, 40g pumpkin, 1 banana, 10 blueberries, 40g broccoli, 1 apricot, 40g pineapple.

As you can see, it is far easier to simply add a teaspoon of the top superfoods in supplement form to a smoothie, some juice or even your breakfast cereal. By doing so, you will be providing your body with over 10,000 ORAC units, which is more than what most people have in a day!

ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Asorption Capacity and is the standard measurement for the antioxidant value of food or supplements. The higher the value, the better the food or supplement is at being able to reduce the ‘free radical load’ that your body experiences on a daily basis.

Why you must have a variety of top superfoods

Not only is a high ORAC value important, but it is also absolutely essential that you obtain antioxidants from a wide variety of superfoods rather than single sources. This is because individual superfoods provide a limited numer of antioxidants and each antioxidant targets a specific numer of free radicals.

Therefore, consuming many superfoods means that your body will obtain a wide range of antioxidants. This means that many more different types of free radicals in your body may be mopped up, which reduces your free radical load and dramatically improves your health and well being.
