Can You Turn Fat Into Muscle ?

turn fat into muscle

It is commonly believed that it is possible to turn fat into muscle by applying the correct nutrition, exercise and supplementation principles. Unfortunately though, it is a physiological impossibility simply because fat and muscle are composed of completely different tissues!

However, this myth does have an element of truth and in this article we examine why.

The human body is a ‘dynamic structure’

You see, the human body is constantly changing; it is continuously building up and breaking down tissues. And depending on the ‘stresses’ being placed upon the body, it can adapt and change itself structurally.

For example, if a professional athlete builds up a certain amount of muscle over their lifetime as an athlete and then after they retire their lifestyle completely changes (and they become more sedentary), you can see the obvious changes in their body composition; it looks like their muscle mass has turned into fat.

On the other hand, if you regularly train with weights, consume enough overall calories and protein, and allow your body an adequate amount of rest, you will increase your muscle mass. Does this mean that you’ve been able to turn body fat into muscle?

Unfortunately, no. What has happened though in both of these cases is that the muscle cells have increased or decreased in size and the fat cells have also increased or decreased in size. So it looks as if the muscle has turned into fat or that you’ve been ale to turn fat into muscle.

This occurs because the space that was previous occupied by fat or muscle has now been replaced by the alternative tissue. This is why there is an element of truth to the myth.

The fact is that it is impossible to turn fat into muscle or vice versa simply because they are composed of completely different tissues. Fat is composed mainly of fat and muscle is composed mainly of protein and water. It is impossible to turn fat into protein and water.

Despite the fact that it isn’t possile to turn fat into muscle, it is possile to lose fat maintain muscle or build muscle and lose fat. This can easily be achieved by following the correct principles of nutrition, exercise and supplementation.

It is so important to maintain your muscle mass as you lose fat (weight) simply because muscle is a metabolically-active tissue and helps to keep your metabolism elevated.

If your body indiscriminately loses weight (both fat and muscle), it is highly likely that you will put the weight back on at some stage in the future because you have likely used one of the many ‘short-cut’ methods to lose weight.

Some of these methods include: skipping meals or starving yourself, not exercising, particularly resistance exercise, and limiting your protein intake. If you want to lose fat maintain muscle or build muscle and lose fat while you drop the kilos, then it is absolutely essential that you avoid any or the ‘short-cut’ methods to lose weight.

So even though it is impossible to turn fat into muscle, you can still achieve your physical goals by following the correct principles.
