Type 2 Diabetes Diets

The type 2 diabetes diets that are recommended by most doctors, nutritionists and dieticians are completely wrong! The sample diabetic menus they provide their patients/ clients will NOT help to improve the diabetic condition. In fact, what they provide as a diabetes control diet will actually make the diabetes condition worse!

Unfortunately, doctors are given very little schooling in nutrition and the fundamentals taught to nutritionists and dieticians are designed to promote food products from companies that provide funding to the universities!

Hence, the USDA food pyramid that has been promoted for 30+ years has been responsible for diabetes probably more than any other nutritional recommnedation!

One of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance, which is characterised by an inability of body cells to bind insulin and allow nutrients (glucose, amino acids, etc.) to flow into cells.

One of the causes of insulin resistance is an excess consumption of carbohydrates over many years which then results in the insulin receptors on cell membranes becoming 'down-regulated' to the action of insulin.

Insulin gets produced in response to an increase in the blood sugar level and in healthy people insulin will then bind to insulin receptors on cell membranes and allow glucose and other nutrients to get into the cell. When a person with insulin resistance consumes a diet high in carbohydrates, as is generally recommended, the insulin resistance becomes worse!

A book written in 2005 by two well-respected English doctors is a so-called guide to type 2 diabetes.

On page 44 they say:

'...a meal which is rich in carbohydrates causes your blood sugar level to increase out of control.'

Then later in the book on page 63 they say:

'A healthy diet for diabetics should be rich in starchy foods, such as bread, pasta, potatoes, cereals and rice.'

Such a contradiction is not uncommon. People with insulin resistance (type 2 diabetics and women with poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) should consume a low-carbohydrate diet! By following this approach, over time, the insulin receptors will be forced to 're-open' and allow nutrients to flow into the cells again.

This means the ideal menu for diabetics is one that contains less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. This equates to less than 10 grams of carbohydrates per meal (if 5 or 6 small meals a day) are consumed. Plus, it is best if these carbohydrates comes from medium or low-density sources as well as low GI sources.

In suitable type 2 diabetes diets the carbohydrates they do eat will have minimal impact on their blood sugar levels and therefore, insulin response.

Over time, this approach will help the insulin receptors re-open and allow the nutrients to flow easily into the cells again.

In addition to the carbohydrates, it is important to consume adequate good fats to ensure the cell membranes become fluid and permeable. Omega-3s from fish oils are a great option.

It is imperative that people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes incorporate strategies into their lifestyle to help them overcome the condition.

GI Factor is a product that has been specifically-designed for people with insulin resistance and is highly recommended.

It contains a range of glucose disposal agents that have been shown to help keep the blood sugar stable as well as assist insulin in its function. It is the ideal supplement to be used with type 2 diabetes diets.
