The Best Ways to
Learn Weight Lifting Exercises

Weight Lifting Exercises If you want to be able to perform weight lifting exercises correctly and structure your workouts to get the best possible results, you need to discover how to do this.

Weight training or weight lifting exercises are fast becoming one of the most popular forms of exercise simply because more people are discovering the benefits of lifting weights. Not only from a cosmetic point of view but also for the physiological and psychological benefits that it offers.

In their famous book, Biomarkers, Professors William Evans and Irwin Rosenberg state that, ‘Muscle, to a far greater extent than most people realize, is responsible for the vitality of your whole physiology.’ Furthermore, lifting weights has been shown to reduce stress and increase the feelings of well-being.

One thing that has become alarmingly obvious to me after many years of being involved in the fitness industry is that the vast majority of people who perform resistance (weight) training workouts on a regular basis don’t know how to get the best results from their workouts. They either don’t know how to perform the exercises correctly or they have no structure to their workouts.

Incorrect performance of exercises may result in an increased risk of injury and a decreased level of stress placed on the targeted muscle or group of muscles. This means each exercise is of limited effectiveness.

No structure to workouts may result from the following factors:

• Not knowing what exercise was performed and/ or what weight was used in the previous workout for the targeted muscle group.
• Not knowing how many sets or reps were performed in the previous workout for the targeted muscle group.
• No planning of exercises in the current workout.
• No planning of muscle group training in their current workout.
• Not knowing how many sets or reps will be performed on each exercise.

As a result of not having any structure to their workouts and not knowing how to perform the exercises correctly, most people who initially get involved in a resistance (weight) training program stop going after a few weeks. They find that, even with the best of intentions, their investment of time and effort in the gym is not paying the dividends they expect!

Unfortunately, most commercial gyms rely on a high drop-out in order to make money! They simply don't have the facilities to cater for the large number of people they have as members.

Here are some of the best ways that I've found to help you learn how to perform weight training or weight lifting exercises correctly:

• Reading books that explain how to perform the exercises

• Employing the services of an experienced personal trainer

• Watching exercise videos on You Tube

• Speaking to bodybuilders in the gym

• Practicing the movements

• Understanding human anatomy and physiology and then determining the best way to perform the movement based on physiological function
(however, this is a very long process and unless you are really passionate about it, I don't recommend this approach)

Reading books to learn about weight lifting exercises

Reading books can provide you with a wealth of information about how to perform weight lifting or bodybuilding exercises correctly. They are generally written by knowledgeable, experienced and well-qualified people and can be used as a reference that can be referred back to on a continuous basis.

There is a great book that is worthwhile reading if you want to learn how to perform weight lifting exercises correctly. It is called Weight Lifting For Absolute Beginners.

Employing a personal trainer to learn weight lifting exercises

This might sound a bit biased because personal training is my background but I can honestly say that a good personal trainer is a great investment in your time an money.

A good personal trainer can provide you with information that you will be able to use for the rest of your life. Plus, this is knowledge that has taken them years of study and experience to accumulate and you can get it in a matter of minutes!

YouTube videos to learn weight lifting exercises

YouTube is a great source of information and entertainment. There are plenty of free videos that demonstrate and explain the weight training exercises that you want to learn. However, make sure you check the credentials of the person demonstrating the exercises before you go ahead and follow their recommendations.

Speaking to bodybuilders in the gym

Bodybuilders are generally pretty friendly and are often happy to share their years of weight training experience and knowledge with other people who are willing to learn.

Even though they may not have done all the courses, they have been 'in the trenches' day in, day out, putting what they do know into practice, learning from their mistakes, refining their training, trying new techniques, etc. Often the knowledge that is available from people who are living proof, may be better than someone who has simply gained their knowledge from a book but hasn't put what they learn into practice.

The only precaution is that some of the exercises that bodybuilders recommend may not be the safest and they are able to perform them simply because they are well-conditioned athletes. However, the exercises or the way they perform the exercises may not suit everybody.

Practicing the weight lifting exercises

One of the best ways to learn is simply by doing! Get in the gym and try the weight training exercises yourself. Remain very conscious of how your body feels as you perform the movement and of course, be aware of the difference between 'good pain' and 'bad pain'.

Obviously, it is best to start off with a much lighter weight than you could handle and then gradually increase the resistance over a period of time.

Learn weight lifting exercise by learning human anatomy first

If you are really passionate about human anatomy and physiology (like I am), then I suggest learning about human anatomy and physiology. Once you have a good understanding of the human body and the actions of the muscles, you will be able to easily determine how to perform exercises correctly in order to work the muscles effectively.

In another article I will show you a really simple process that you can go through to analyse any exercise in the gym to make sure you are performing it correctly. Plus, this process will give you a great understanding about the functions of muscles.
