Weight Loss And Weight Training

Weight Loss And Weight Training

For most people the idea of weight loss and weight training seem completely opposite but in fact, weight or strength training and weight loss are perfect partners! So much so that weight training training (or strength training) is probably the most under-estimated way to lose weight fast!

Most people mistakenly believe that if they perform weight training or strength training they will end up looking like a bodybuilder! This is a complete fallacy and in fact weight training is the best form of exercise for rapidly transforming your body.

The truth is that is you don’t perform some sort of resistance exercise in your weight-loss program then the weight you lose is likely to come from both fat and muscle. In fact, up to half of the weight you lose can come from muscle, which means your metabolic rate will slow down because muscle is one of the most metabolically-active tissues in the body.

If you do perform weight training in your quest to lose weight, the weight you lose will come almost exclusively from your fat stores because the resistance exercise forces your body to maintain its existing muscle mass. This will help to keep your metabolism elevated so you keep burning fat long term.

Scientists believe that a loss of muscle as we age is the main contributing factor for putting on weight as we age .

Now, it is not essential that you go to a gym and lift weights in order to benefit from resistance training (even though it is the best form), you can easily perform some simple exercises at home that can stimulate your muscles.

Of course, it is possible to put on weight (bulk up) by resistance training. If you eat an excess of calories (food) then your body will use the extra protein you consume to build muscle. However, if you control your food intake, as you should do if you want to lose weight, then your body will only be able to maintain your existing muscle mass, which for most people is the ideal situation.

By maintaining your muscle mass through weight (resistance) training and simultaneously losing weight, you will be able to achieve that highly desirable ‘toned’ look to your body.

Overall, weight loss and weight training are a great combination. Keep this in mind next time you tell someone that you’re weight training to help your weight-loss efforts.

If you do mention it, they are likely to start telling you that you’re going to ‘bulk up’ or that the muscle will turn to fat when you stop training or some other ridiculous myth. These are common but totally incorrect beliefs held by many people, particularly well-intentioned but ignorant friends or family members! And they are usually jealous of the fact that you are doing something positive for your health and they’re not!

Simply disregard their comments and get into your training, full steam ahead! Weight loss and weight training are a fantastic combination. It can't be recommended highly enough!
