What doctors don't tell you.

(UK)

As a younger woman I suffered with PCOS, requiring total abdominal clearance at 38 years of age. From then on, in induced early menopause I struggled with my weight. I have lived on a 1000-1400 calorie diet since 21 when I first started to have ovarian cyst problems. I am now 55 and have been on high dose steroids (60mg Prednisolone per day). I have gained a further 3 stone in the 2 years 3 months that I have been on steroids. I see many consultants and when I ask what to do about my weight gain... I am told to lower my calorie intake. NO ONE HAS EVER MENTIONED THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INSULIN RESISTANCE or LOW CARBOHYDRATES !!!!! I find this interesting as the steroids cause major fluctuations with my blood sugar level.

Four days ago I commenced a low carb diet and have lost four pounds... This is significant as I have not lost any weight since age 38... No matter how much exercise or low calorie diet I have taken. I hope and pray that I have found the solution, as I have a long way. To go to being a normal heathy weight again.

Many thanks for your information.

Hi Helen,

Thanks for taking the time to explain your situation and experiences. I'm sorry to hear about what you have gone through. I'm sure there are many people who can relate to what you have said.

Unfortunately, our doctors are not always the best people to speak to when it comes to health even though society places them in a position of respect.

Their many years of conventional medical training involves learning about various medications (drugs) and their effects in the body. Very little information is covered about how they can return someone to good health through natural means. This is simply because drugs companies tend to 'sponsor' research at universities.

It is such a shame that a more balanced view on health is not taught. However, with the internet we do have the opportunity to be proactive in looking after our own health, becoming more informed and to make our own decisions when it comes to the health of our body.

Helen, once again, thank you for your comments and I sincerely hope that the low-carb path you are on will make a major difference in your quest for weight loss.

Kind Regards,

Steve.
