What Small Lifestyle Changes Can You Make?

When it comes to losing weight one of the very best things you can do is simply make small lifestyle changes that you can maintain long term. Long-term, sustainable lifestyle habits are the ONLY way to achieve permanent weight loss. Following a strict diet or gruelling exercise program almost guarantees that you won't be able to maintain the results you achieve because eventually you will give up and return to previous lifestyle habits.

Small lifestyle change can achieve amazing weight loss results

It is absolutely essential that the principles you employ to lose weight become permanent lifestyle habits. Therefore, choosing small lifestyle changes is definitely the best way to go simply because they are easy!

1. >Examine your current habits The first step you need to take is to examine your current habits to determine what is stopping you from losing weight at the moment. It may be the fact that you don't exercise, you skip breakfast, you eat too much, particularly for your evening meal, you drink alcohol most days, you consume soft drink every day, and/ or you always have dessert after dinner each night.

2. Determine what habits you can change or modify

Once you have identified the habits that are stopping you from losing weight, write them all down. Then, determine which of those habits you are willing to change or at least modify.

3. Incorporate the changes into your lifestyle

Having small, frequent meals may be a good habit to incorporate into your lifestyle Once you have determined what changes you are willing to make then you must take action! Immediately take the steps that are necessary in order to see your weight-loss goal come to fruition.

A friend of mine recently lost 10 kilograms (22 pounds) in 5 weeks. All he did was reduce the portion size of all his meals, cut out drinking Coke every day, and reduced his alcohol intake to one or two days a week, instead of having a 'couple of beers' after work every day. Plus, he also started taking his dog for a leisurely walk every morning before breakfast.

He said initially it wasn't easy because he craved the sugar that he had cut out. He even had 'headaches' for the first 3-4 days after making the lifestyle changes. However, after a few days the headaches went away and it became much easier to maintain his new lifestyle habits.

From a personal perspective I recently stopped having an ice-cream each night after dinner. Magnum ice creams are one of my favourites and recently they brought out a range of 'Magnum 5 Kisses' flavours. Of course, I had to try them all! They are mini ice creams so that made it much easier to justify to myself. Furthermore, I didn't just buy one ice cream flavour at a time, I bought a whole box when I did the grocery shopping!

Now, having tried all of the flavours (many times each!) I decided it was time to stop the habit. Initially, I found it a little bit tough because I was craving the ice cream after dinner. This was simply because it became a conditioned response. However, after a few days the cravings disappeared altogether.

Now it's your turn! Ask yourself, 'What small lifestyle changes can you make?' What habits are stopping you from losing weight and finally achieving the body of your dreams. Most importantly though, what habits are you willing to change or modify in order to begin your own weight-loss journey and achieve your personal weight-loss goal!
