How Whey Protein Powder
|
|||
The best whey protein powder to use to accelerate your weight loss is one that contains a high amount of protein per serve, is low in fat and low in carbohydrate. It should also mix instantly and have a pleasant taste. This will make it much easier to incorporate into your lifestyle and make having it a permanent lifestyle habit.
Whey is one of the protein components of milk, the other being casein, and is composed of many smaller subfractions, which have been shown to have a range of beneficial health benefits. Whey protein is actually a by-product of the cheese manufacturing process and once it is dried and purified we are left with whey protein.
Depending on the different types of extraction and refining processes used, diffferent quality whey protein will result. The three processing techniques are concentration, isolation and hydrolyzing. There may be other names for the different processing techniques of whey protein but they are all bascially the same thing. For example, ion-exchange, cross-flow micro-filtration and ultra-filatration are techniques used to create whey protein isolates.
Highest quality source of protein
Whey protein is the highest quality source of protein that we are aware of at the moment. It has the highest
Biological Value (BV) compared to any other source of protein. BV is a rating that is given to various types of
protein based on their digestibility, i.e. the faster a protein source is digested, absorbed and utilised by the body, the
higher the BV rating it receives.
Since whey protein has a very high BV it is great for helping to build or at least maintain muscle. This means you can keep your metabolism elevated and will burn fat faster.
In fact, one study in particular found that when whey protein was consumed prior to an exercise session it has the effect of increasing muscle mass. Of course by doing so, you can increase your metabolism quite dramatically!
Whey protein's influence on appetite
Whey protein has been shown to increase the release of a hormone, cholecystokinin (CCK), from the stomach. CCK is responsible for
feelings of satiety (fullness) following a meal. Several research studies have shown that having whey protein prior to a meal increased CCK
by about 60% and led to a decreased food intake during the meal compared to other protein sources.
Whey protein and insulin
Some research suggests that whey protein may increase insulin sensitivity and decrease plasma insulin levels. By keeping insulin
low and by increasing the body sensitivity to it, your body will become more efficient at accessing at utilising fat as a fuel source.
Whey protein powder and serotonin
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2000 found that supplementing a person's diet with a high quality whey protein powder
increased the level of tryptophan in the blood stream. Since tryptophan is required for serotonin production in the body, supplementing with a whey protein powder may
have an impact on serotonin production too.
This is great news for dieters because serotonin tends to become low when dieting and low serotonin has been linked to an increase in appetite. Plus, the increase in serotonin from whey protein powder supplementation has been shown to reduce the impact of stress on the body, i.e. cortisol decreases. This means that people who have a tendency to eat as a result of feeling stressed may actually be able to reduce their intake.
Overall, whey protein powder is definitely a great supplement to include in your diet no matter whether you want to burn fat, tone up or build muscle. Plus, the health benefits it offers means that it is certainly something that most people should include in their diet on a daily basis.
