In order to understand why the reasons why this approach is the best for toning, you need to firstly define what toning is. A dictionary definition of 'toning' describes it as, 'creating tension or firmness in the body.' Therefore, how do we create 'firmness', as this is how most people think of toning? Well, in order to answer that question, you need to firstly understand some basics of physiology because most people think that virtually any form of exercise can help you 'firm up' or 'tone up' the muscles being worked. Unfortunately, this is incorrect for several reasons.

Muscles and ToningFirstly, it is impossible to 'firm up' or 'tone up' muscles. Muscles can only increase or decrease in size; they cannot harden up through exercise or get soft through lack of exercise.
Aerobic Exercise and ToningFurthermore, as a general rule, aerobic exercise alone cannot achieve toning. It must always be in combination with resistance exercise. This will become clearer in a moment when we examine exactly how to achieve a 'toned body'.Next, we need to provide a more detailed definition of what 'toning' is. Then we can examine exactly what the best workout routines for toning are.
Our Definition of Toning'Toning', by our definition, is achieving 'firmness' in a body part (not a muscle) by changing the composition of that body part. Keep in mind of course that a body part, let's say, your arm, is made up of muscle, fat, connective tissue, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Muscle is simply one component of the body part. Therefore, the best way to achieve 'tone' or 'firmness' in a body part is by maintaining or increasing muscle mass in combination with a loss of fat mass. Since muscle is a denser tissue that fat, by altering the body composition in this way, you can improve the 'tone' or 'firmness' of the body part. The best way to increase or maintain muscle is through resistance exercise and the best way to immediately burn off fat is through aerobic exercise. Accordingly, a combination of both forms of exercise works best to achieve a 'toned' body and is the basic structure for the best workout routines for toning. Unfortunately, many people avoid lifting weights because they have the mistaken belief that they will 'bulk up'. Of course, it is possible for this to occur if you don't control your food intake. However, with appropriate food control it is impossible to build muscle because there are extra calories to build muscle with!
What If You Don't Lift Weights?Plus, if you don't perform the resistance exercise and only perform aerobic exercise, your body will indiscriminately lose both fat and muscle tissue, which goes against the process for achieving a toned look.To take this one step further, there is a way to structure your workouts so you get the best possible results from the session.
